District tourney starts today

The spring prep postseason officially begins today with the start of the Class 3A Western Slope League District Tournament.

Two area teams open play in districts today with fourth-seed Roaring Fork playing at home against Gunnison, and No. 8 Basalt traveling to regular-season champion Eagle Valley. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Roaring Fork (9-5 in league) split with Gunnison (7-7) in their season series. Both games were played at



Gunnison with the Cowboys winning the first half of the doubleheader 8-6, and Roaring Fork winning the second game 14-4.

Basalt lost both its games against Eagle Valley, and both losses came via the 10-run rule. Eagle Valley lost just two games this season and is the favorite to win the District tournament.



In other district games today, third-seed Olathe (10-4) hosts sixth-seed Cedaredge and second-seed Hotchkiss (11-3) has a home game against seventh-seed Aspen (2-12). Both games begin at 2 p.m.

The winners of the first round advance to the games Friday at either Delta or Montrose (the site has yet to be decided). The winners of Friday’s semifinal games play in the championship at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The losers play for the final playoff spot of the WSL at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
