The Basalt boys basketball improved in Friday’s nonleague game, but suffered its second straight loss in as many games.Staff ReportThe Basalt boys basketball improved in Friday’s nonleague game, but suffered its second straight loss in as many games.Fresh off a 30-point defeat at Rifle the night before, the Longhorns dropped a 53-44 decision to Class 4A Moffat County at Basalt’s Big House.After dueling the visiting Bulldogs to a 9-all first quarter, the Longhorns dipped to a 22-16 deficit at halftime and trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half.Cody Burkholder led all scorers with 16. Two Moffat County players – Chance Buckner and Zack Haddan – finished in double figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Cardinals fall to HaydenOpening on the road, the Grand Valley Cardinal boys absorbed a 56-48 nonleague loss at Hayden.Sam McKinley and Dylan Culver led the offense with 17 and 13 points each as Grand Valley (0-1) stayed within three points of the Tigers in the first half before falling back after being outscored with 19-11 in the third quarter.Tigers forward Evan Hilling led with 22 points, which included four, 3-pointers.
