PUEBLO – The three inches Tyler Thompson has grown since last year paid off handsomely at the Class 2A/3A state track and field meet at Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo on Saturday. The rapidly sprouting Roaring Fork High School sophomore – who now stands 5 feet, 11 1/2 inches – parlayed the extra height into a fourth-place finish in the Class 3A triple jump. Well, that and a spirited work ethic.”I think it’s just working hard,” said the always-busy Thompson, who also plays football, golf and basketball. “And the height helped a little bit. I have longer legs, so I can reach a little farther. I don’t know.”Faith Christian duo Graham Yantis – who notched a winning leap of 44 feet, 7 1/2 inches – and Hayden Loudenslager (43-3) fronted the triple jump field. Tyler Stratman of Cedaredge finished third (43-2), with Thompson (43-1) close behind.Thompson competed in the long jump finals Friday, finishing 19th overall.

Rams coach Jennifer Olson doesn’t see why Thompson can’t contend for a state title in the years to come. “I think he could be (a state champ),” she said. “If he continues his training over the summer. If he really wants it, he’ll get it.”Thompson’s Roaring Fork teammate, Jon Araujo, also competed at state, finishing 17th in the shot put with a top toss of 41-3 1/2.

Coal Ridge’s David Anderson and DaLin Murphy, both sophomores, were both making repeat state performances on Saturday. After taking the third-best time in Friday’s preliminaries, Anderson placed seventh in Saturday’s Class 3A 400-meter dash finals. He attributed the drop-off, in part, to the Pueblo heat, which reached the mid-80s.”I really just think it was the weather,” said Anderson, who clocked in at 52.09 seconds. “It’s really hot out here, and you really have to stay hydrated. I guess I didn’t do a good job, and I paid for it on the corner.”He also wants to hone his approach on the blocks. “I’ve got to learn better starts,” he said. “I really want to come out faster than I do. That’s definitely the No. 1 thing I need to work on.”Murphy also battled the heat in the 3A 3,200, in which he placed 19th at 11 minutes, 6.22 seconds.

Grand Valley junior Emmy Adkins took sixth place in the Class 2A 400 meters, timing in at 1:01.61. It was the second straight state appearance for Adkins, who competed in the 100 and 200 last year.
