Four state qualifers back for Coal Ridge track season

PEACH VALLEY ” Even with seniors on its team for the first time, the Coal Ridge track and field team is still a young squad. Young, but talented.

The 35-plus squad has returning state qualifers like Chelyn McCain (sophomore), Bradey Gasaway (Junior), Blake Rivers (sophomore) and Colby Fauser (sophomore) leading the way this season.

Second-year head coach Meggie Kirk says she has been working with the team indoors, and outdoors when the Titans can, to get ready for their first meet on Saturday at Delta.

“The long distance kids have just been putting a lot of miles in, trying to get a base,” Kirk said. “The jumpers started jumping last week, the sprinters have been doing a pretty intense workout and the throwers are lifting weights before they throw. They have been working hard and just trying to get a good base.”

Kirk says it is hard for the athletes to train outdoors because of the asphalt track at Coal Ridge High School, but she’s optimistic that will be changing. This summer the school is planning on installing an actual track, which Kirk says will not only help the team train more efficiently, but she’s also hoping it would allow the Titans to one day host a home meet.
