Free-heeling heaven this weekend at Sunlight

Sunlight Mountain Resort will be free-heeler central Saturday.

The Sunlight Mountain Telemark Festival features clinics for all levels of telemark skiers, as well as a dual slalom race and a bumps exhibition. The event wraps up with live music at the Sunlight Day Lodge.

Registration for the various activities start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Sunlight Day Lodge. At 10 a.m. free instructional lessons for beginners will be held and there is also a free “Tele with Terry” clinic for the intermediate and experienced telemarker scheduled. Terry Bannon, who has taught telemark lessons for eight years at Sunlight, will lead the informal clinic.

Space is limited for both clinics. For those who need to rent equipment, the rentals must be made in Glenwood Springs. The on mountain rental shop does not offer telemark equipment rentals.

A telemark dual slalom race will be held at 1 p.m., followed by a mogul exhibition at 3 p.m. Participants must sign up in advance and the fee is $5 for the slalom race and $1 for the bumps exhibition.

Live music at the Sunlight Day Lodge from the Boulder band Slipstream caps the day. Billed as a progressive bluegrass band, Slipstream begins play at 5 p.m. and the cover charge is $5.
