G.J. Central hands Rifle 4-0 loss in boys soccer opener

RIFLE — Grand Junction Central High School’s boys soccer team opened the season with a victory Saturday morning, playing through rainy and soggy conditions en route to a 4-0 nonleague win against the Rifle Bears.

The Bears, (0-1-0), who dropped into the Class 3A Western Slope League this season from Class 4A, were able to hold the Class 5A Warriors to just three first-half goals. It was an unusually early season opener for the Bears, who had started each of the past five regular seasons in September.

Carlos Flores scored goals in the seventh and 23rd minutes for the Warriors. Robbie Doxtander scored in the 17th minute, and Memo Gutierrez added a goal in the 76th minute to cap the scoring for Central.

Central’s Jose Enriquez-Avila fended off numerous scoring chances by the Bears, recording eight saves in goal.

Rifle will have the coming week off before playing its next game, which will be Sept. 2 at Grand Valley in Parachute.
