G.J. Central too much for Coal Ridge girls, boys

GRAND JUNCTION — The Class 3A Coal Ridge High School girls basketball team was able to keep up with the 5A Grand Junction Central Warriors for most of the game on Tuesday.

The Warriors, however, pulled away in the final four minutes. Central, after holding just a two-point halftime lead, outscored the Titans 21-12 in the final four minutes on their way to a 54-40 nonleague victory at Brownson Arena.

“We competed right with them for 28 minutes, and then they hit us hard underneath,” Coal Ridge coach Steve Young said. “We matched up very well. Kaitlyn [Detlefsen] was missed, but I was very pleased with the way we played against a 5A school.”

Mariela Martinez finished with a game-high 16 points and Jenny Call added nine points with a pair of 3-pointers for the Titans (2-7 overall), who were down 25-23 at halftime. Coal Ridge was without the services of the 5-foot-11 Detlefsen, who sat out because of sickness.

Coal Ridge continues 3A Western Slope League play Friday at home against Aspen.
