Football

Glenwood Springs (5-3) won at Rifle 27-0 on Friday night. The Demons will continue their state playoff quest this Friday at Steamboat. Roaring Fork (3-4) got a nice road win at Olathe by a count of 33-12. Staying on the bus again this week, the Rams will travel to Cedaredge on Friday. Grand Valley (2-5) lost a nail-biting 8-7 decision at home to Cedaredge on Friday. Coal Ridge (5-2) defeated Middle Park 28-6 at home on Saturday afternoon.

Volleyball

Continuing a late season playoff push, Roaring Fork (9-10) notched conference wins over Basalt on Tuesday 3-2, and at Olathe 3-0 on Thursday. The Rams have enjoyed improved and steady play from Clover Hansen, Nikki Tardif, Erica Crownhart, Carley Crownhart, Yaki Hernandez, and Elizabeth Fullerton. Glenwood Springs (13-3) got a Tuesday win 3-1 against Delta and Thursday 3-0 vs Summit. Saturday, the Demons trekked north to Steamboat and came away with their third victory of the week 3-1.  Some of the key Glenwood contributors in the victorious stretch were Emma Gavrell, Kaylee Molina, Becca Fuentes, Emma Bright, Grace Sims, Amanda Madden, Emory Walter, and Gianna Zambrano. Grand Valley (5-14) lost a Thursday home match to Cedaredge 3-1. Rifle (2-13) dropped games to Summit on Tuesday and at Coal Ridge on Thursday.

Soccer

Glenwood (6-5-1) lost at Rifle 5-3 on Tuesday before bouncing back to take a 3-2 win at Summit on Friday.  Roaring Fork (8-2-2) and Coal Ridge (8-4-2) played to a 0-0 tie on Tuesday at Peach Valley. The Titans then hit the road and got a hard-earned win on Saturday 1-0 at Middle Park. Grand Valley (5-7-1) had a big week, clinching the 2A conference championship with a 4-2 win over Moffat County on Tuesday. The Cardinals dropped a Friday night contest at Ridgway 2-1. After defeating Glenwood on Tuesday, Rifle (10-2-1) continued its win streak with wins on Thursday against Delta 5-0, and Friday at Vail Mountain 1-0. The regular season for area soccer teams wraps up this week.



Cross country

Yampa Valley Golf Club in Craig was the site of the Whistle Pig Invite cross country meet run on Friday with Coal Ridge and Grand Valley both in attendance. Craig Cotter was the top finisher for the Cardinals with a time of 17 minutes, 32 seconds, placing him 5th overall. For the Titans, Jake Curt led the way in 7th place with a time of 17:39. The Coal Ridge girls had two runners place in the top ten. Effie Fletcher, continuing her string of solid performances this fall, was 4th in 20:24. Hailey Whitman placed 7th at 21:28. Grand Valley’s top lady was Mackenzie Johnston at 25:38, placing her 41st in the competitive field.

Glenwood had the weekend off in preparation for the upcoming regional meet this Friday. “We will be traveling to Arvada on Friday for regionals. The girls’ race is at noon and the boys follow at 12:45,” said assistant coach Kim Worline. “We’ve seen a lot of progress throughout the season and are looking forward to the opportunity to race well at regionals.”



Endorphin report

Halloween Hustle 5.5k (3.5 miles)Run, Sunday, Oct. 20 at Glenwood Elementary. A benefit for the Advocate Safehouse Project in Glenwood Springs, 102 runners and walkers, many adorned in Halloween attire turned out on a sunny morning at Glenwood Elementary School. Race was run on Rio Grande Trail and Midland Avenue bike path. Complete race results were not available at press time.

Next local race

Mutombo Grumble 5k Run/Walk. Sunday, November 10, West Glenwood. Race starts at 10am with a $10 entry fee. All proceeds benefit local animal shelters. Scenic course up Mitchell Creek Road and back down. 970-618-7980 for race information.
