Garfield County prep sports roundup for Oct. 8-12

Football

Playing a rare Thursday night contest, the Glenwood Demons dropped a critical conference opener to Eagle Valley 28-21 at Stubler Memorial Field. Glenwood’s final three games will be on the road, starting with Friday night’s trip to Bears’ Stadium in Rifle. Coal Ridge (4-2) traveled to Basalt on Friday night and lost a 42-7 decision to the Longhorns. Rifle (0-6) didn’t have much better luck in a 45-0 loss at Palisade. Roaring Fork (2-4) also found the going to be rather tough, losing 40-0 to Meeker in Carbondale. Grand Valley (2-4) garnered its second win in a row by defeating Olathe 25-14.

Volleyball

Glenwood (10-3) picked up a Tuesday win 3-1 against Eagle Valley. Gianna Zambrano had 8 aces and 13 digs, with Emory Walter contributing 5 aces, 30 assists, and 4 kills in the win over the Devils. The Demons also grabbed a Thursday night win 3-0 over Rifle (2-10) at the Chavez-Spencer Gym in a game dedicated to the memory of Ellie Westphal. Roaring Fork (5-9) shut out Moffat County 3-0 Thursday night in Carbondale. The Rams will hit the road Tuesday (Basalt) and Thursday (Olathe).  Grand Valley (5-12) got a 3-1 home win Thursday versus Olathe. Coal Ridge (6-10) lost 3-1 Thursday at Basalt, then traveled to Grand Junction Central on Saturday and came up short by a 3-2 match score to the Warriors.

Soccer

Roaring Fork (8-2-1) eased past Glenwood Springs (5-4-1) 3-1 on Friday night in Glenwood. The Rams were ranked #4 in the state class 3A poll going into the game. Rifle (7-2-1) won at Basalt 2-0 on Thursday. The Bears will host Glenwood on Tuesday.  Coal Ridge (7-4-1) lost at home to Palisade on Tuesday 3-2 and then got a home win 4-3 over Steamboat on Thursday. In a big league matchup, the Titans will host Roaring Fork on Tuesday. Grand Valley (4-6-1) played to a 1-1 Tuesday tie with Colorado Rocky Mountain School. The Cardinals host Moffat County on Tuesday.



Cross Country

Rifle Creek Golf Course hosted local cross country teams on Tuesday afternoon with Glenwood, Coal Ridge, and Rifle in attendance. Top finishers for the girls were Ana Robinson (Rifle, 19 minutes, 37 seconds, 2nd), Effie Fletcher (Coal Ridge, 19:39, 3rd), Hailey Whitman (Coal Ridge, 20:38, 9th) Eva Hassel (Glenwood, 24:19, 53rd). On the boys’ side it was Jake Curt (Coal Ridge, 17:30,11th), Brody Evans (Coal Ridge, 18:19, 20th), Finn Long (Glenwood, 18:23, 21st), Tanner Merritt (Glenwood, 18:34, 26th).

Softball

Rifle (10-13) closed out its regular season with home wins against Basalt on Tuesday and Cedaredge Friday. The Bears lost at Palisade 14-11 on Wednesday.



Golf

Congratulations to Roaring Fork High School students Griffin Didier, Jackson Stewart, and Hudson Arnold for helping lead Basalt to a third place team finish at the 3A state golf championship in Pueblo. Didier shot rounds of 69-70 to claim second place overall. Stewart (74-73) finished in a tie for 10th, and Arnold (81-79) was 38th. Didier and Arnold are sophomores, Stewart is a senior.

Sunday, October 20, Glenwood Elementary Halloween Hustle 5.5k, Benefit for Advocate Safehouse. $35 registration with race start time at 9:30. Run mostly on Rio Grande Trail.
