Girls start hoop tourney starts today

The 2002-03 post-season PEG League 8th grade girls basketball tournament is scheduled to start this afternoon.

The single-elimination tournament culminates with Saturday’s championship game at Basalt Middle School. Tipoff for all three of today’s first-round games is scheduled for 5 p.m.

The first round contests pits host Basalt, the No. 2 seed with a 5-1 regular season mark, against No. 7 Parachute St. John (0-6). Further downvalley, No. 3 Rifle (4-2) hosts No. 6 Carbondale (1-5). The third match has No. 5 Aspen (2-4) travelling to No. 4 Glenwood Springs (3-3).



First round winners advance to Thursday’s semifinals at Basalt Middle School.

At 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the winners from the Basalt-St. John/Rifle-Carbondale first-round games face each other.



The winner of the Glenwood-Aspen game faces No. 1 New Castle Riverside (6-0) in one semifinal contest at 6 p.m.

Semifinal losers play for third place at 9 a.m. Saturday at BMS, followed by the championship game at 10:30 a.m.
