Glenwood blanks Palisade, 3-0

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. ” Leah Mansfield scored on the first shot of the girls soccer game and Glenwood rolled with it, scoring two more in the first half on its way to a 3-0 victory over Palisade on Saturday.

The win locked up the No. 3 spot in the Class 4A Western Slope League, guaranteeing a playoff spot for the Demons (9-3-1 WSL, 9-4-1 overall).

Only 4 minutes and 16 seconds into the game, Mansfield dribbled down the left side of the field and blasted a goal over the outstretched arms of Bulldog goalie Amelia Davis.

Twenty minutes later Corrina Gibbson showed off her wheels, zooming past Palisade defenders and firing a shot on goal. Davis deflected the shot, but Meghan Cleland pounced on the rebound and put it in the back of the net to put the Demons up 2-0.

With 3:21 left in the first half, Carly Stillman capitalized on a penalty shot, sending a roller into the left corner of the goal as Glenwood went up 3-0 at halftime.

Palisade (7-6 WSL) got seven shots in the second half, but none were very threatening and all were stopped by Glenwood keeper Anna Kulweic.

The Demons will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the No. 2 Steamboat Sailors at 4 p.m. in their regular-season finale.

As the clock ran out, the Battle Mountain girls’ soccer team ran for goalie Kori Landauer and then waved to the crowd, celebrating the program’s first league title, which was iced by a 7-0 win over Rifle at Freedom Park in Edwards on Saturday.

It was the season finale for Rifle, which dropped to 4-9-0 in the WSL and 4-10 overall with the loss. It was also the last game for seven senior Bears, including star goalie Kadie LaRocque.
