Glenwood Defiance to host Ski Town Rugby Classic tournament

The Glenwood Defiance Rugby Club will host the annual Ski Town Rugby Classic tournament, which is scheduled for Aug. 3 and 4 in Glenwood Springs.

The tournament, a rotational event and one of the larger resort-town rugby tournaments in Colorado, also parallels Defiance’s celebration of the team’s 20th anniversary.

Games will be held at Glenwood Park and at Sopris Elementary School. Close to 500 rugby players and an estimated three-dozen teams from around the nation will play, including the Missoula (Mont.) Maggots and a team from Jackson Hole, Wyo. There will also be a women’s rugby tournament which will include teams from Steamboat Springs, Grand Junction, Denver and Alberquerque, N.M.

Also attending will be teams Defiance plays regularly, including the Gentlemen of Aspen, Steamboat Springs, Vail, Breckenridge and the Denver Jesters.

Games will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days of the tournament. No gate fee will be charged at any of the games. Beer mugs and T-shirts will be available for purchase at the field, and food and beverages will also be available.
