Glenwood Grizzlies ride winning streak

It’s taken longer for the Glenwood Midget youth hockey players to hit their stride this season, but the Grizzlies have apparently turned a corner after recent victories against Vail and the Howelson Hockey Club.

“We got all our guys now,” said Midget coach Tim Cota of the team’s current five-game winning streak, which has raised Glenwood’s overall mark to 8-7.

In the Vail game on Dec. 9 at Dobson Arena, the Grizzlies earned a 6-4 win by scoring five goals in the third period to erase a 4-1 deficit after two periods of play.

Forward Jesse Cline scored the game-winner with four minutes, 46 seconds remaining. Jimmy Carter added an insurance goal two minutes later for the final score.

The Grizzlies, led by two-goal scorer Kevin Young, secured a 7-2 victory over Howelson of Steamboat Springs on Dec. 17. Glenwood received additional offensive help from forward Colby Burling’s second period score and two assists.

Goalkeeper Brian King played the entire game, making 15 saves in 17 Steamboat shots.

The Midgets have a nonleague doubleheader on tap today at the Community Center ice rink. Glenwood faces Oak Creek at 9 a.m., then returns to the ice at 4 p.m. against Aspen.
