Glenwood High XC team honoring Driskill with race

Joelle MilholmGlenwood Springs, CO Colorado

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. Glenwood Springs has always been a running town, fully of speedy, hard-core athletes. No one defined that more than Paul Driskill, the 70-year-old runner, who ran nearly every day for 30 years before being severely injured in a hit-and-run accident on Sept. 22.Now the town wants to give back to its running mascot and the Glenwood Springs High School cross-country team is leading the way. The squad is hosting a fundraiser to help Driskill, who suffered injuries including a broken neck, injured spine, bleeding in his brain, broken ribs and a broken sternum, a gash to his jugular vein and stitches all over his face, with his medical bills. And what better way to do it than by getting people out for a run.On Wednesday, October 10, the Demons will host a 5K race and a 2.5K fun run/walk in support of Driskill. The course, which will begin in the field behind Glenwood Springs High School, is 99 percent off-road, featuring grass, soft path, and rock trails. Registration begins at 4:15 p.m. and races begin at 5 p.m. The recommended entry fee is $15, but donations of more will be gladly accepted. There will also be a silent auction of running and outdoor sports items. If you have any questions or would like to pre-register, please contact Mike Schneiter at 309-4795 or by e-mail at mschneiter@rfsd.k12.co.us. And, if any local businesses or individuals would like to help in this endeavor, through donation of products, services or time, please contact Coach Schneiter.
