GOLDEN, Colorado – Kevin Flohr scored 27 points and Russell Collins had 12 as Glenwood Springs’ boys basketball team edged Golden, 62-58, in the first round of the D’Evelyn/Golden Preview Classic on Thursday.

Glenwood, now 2-0 on the young season, rallied from an early 13-2 deficit to lead most of the game.

Josh Galvan hit a pair of game-icing free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Glenwood will face Pueblo Central at 7 p.m. tonight in the second round of the eight-team tournament.

Cardinal girls open

MEEKER, Colorado – Erin Vanderpool scored 12 points and Shawnee Young and Karmen Steimel contributed 10 apiece as Grand Valley’s girls basketball team outgunned North Park, 52-45, in the first round of the Meeker Shootout on Thursday.

The Cardinals’ season-opening win wasn’t the prettiest of victories.

“You know, we have a lot of first-game quirks to fix,” Grand Valley coach Mike Johnson said. “We shot horribly, but we played pretty hard. We did some nice things toward the end. They just packed into a zone and we couldn’t hit a darn thing to start the game.”

Johnson’s squad will look to clean some of that up in tonight’s second-round contest against Rangely. Tipoff is slated for 6:15 p.m.
