Glenwood Springs cheerleaders achieve goal

Trophies and television appearances weren’t the main goal for the Glenwood Springs High School cheerleaders when they lined up for the preliminary round of the national championships.

“If we do our best and come off the floor with no regrets, that’s what makes our coaches happy,” said Cassie Croissant, one of the cheer squad’s captains, before departing for Orlando, Fla., Thursday.It’s an accomplishment the 16-member unit obtained with flying colors.

Competing in a field of 61 schools, the Demons cheerleaders fell short of advancing from the prelims to the varsity all-girl medium semifinals. But that’s OK. Reaching the Universal Cheerleaders Association-sponsored event is an award unto itself.Glenwood, one of just three Colorado high schools at this weekend’s competition, earned its way in with a third-place finish at the Rocky Mountain regional in Denver.

A month after the Rocky Mountain regional, the Demons earned their third straight Class 4A state title at the Colorado High School Activities Association-sponsored spirit championships.Greenup County High School from Kentucky, the pre-event favorite, won the division. It was the Greenup cheerleaders’ 12th national championship in the 25-year history of the event.Collierville (Tenn.) was the runner-up. Bolton High School of Alexandria, La., came in third.
