Glenwood Springs, Coal Ridge open soccer playoffs at home

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” Fresh off its strongest regular season in some time, Glenwood Springs’ girls soccer team is set to take its game from the Western Slope to the state stage.

The 12-1-1 Demons open the 32-team Class 4A state playoffs at home against Evergreen (7-7-1) on Tuesday. The game’s time was not available as of press time Sunday.

Evergreen, which finished fourth in the JeffCo League in the regular season and holds the bracket’s 17th seed, is paced by leading scorers Haley Stading (18 goals) and Anya Kaufmann (12 goals).

Glenwood, which finished second in the Western Slope League behind Steamboat Springs and owns the No. 16 seed, is led in scoring by a trio of freshmen. Holly Brown, Corey Gera and Michaela Mansfield combined to score 40 goals in the regular season.

The winner faces either No. 1 Wheat Ridge or No. 32 Palisade in the second round.

PEACH VALLEY, Colorado ” Coal Ridge landed Class 3A’s No. 7 seed and will open the playoffs at home on Wednesday.

The 14-0-1 Titans will welcome No. 26 Bayfield, which takes a 6-1-3 regular-season mark into the postseason, to Peach Valley. The game’s time was not available at press time Sunday.

Coal Ridge is led by Sydney Wright and her 17 goals. Chelsie Ryan, out with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, finished second to Wright in regular-season scoring with 15 goals. Kourtney Mitchell had 11.

Keenan Moreta is Bayfield’s leading scorer.

The winner moves on to battle either No. 2 Denver Christian or No. 23 Vail Mountain in the second round.
