Glenwood Springs swimmers do well at state

LOVELAND, Colorado ” The Glenwood Springs swimmers made their mark at the Class 4A state swimming and diving meet over the weekend at Mountain View High School in Loveland.

Individually, senior Sierra Grove brought back a fourth and fifth place finishes for the Demons and sophomore Keevyn Scholl nabbed 10th.

Grove was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a personal best 24.6 seconds, and hit another PR in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.6.

Scholl was 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.06, also a personal best.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Morgan Wyrick, Scholl, Anna Wiltse, and Grove placed 15th with a time of 1:47.58.

Junior Christina Smith gave up her spot as the first leg to teammate senior Wyrick.

“Christina wanted Morgan to swim because she’s a senior,” Demons coach Michelle Brune said. “I that that was fantastic. I would’ve never asked anyone to do that. It shows real leadership.”

The driving force behind the Demons over the weekend was their ability to stick together as a team, Brune said. Smaller swimming programs tend to sway more toward individual accomplishments, with not much focus on the whole team. That’s not how Glenwood operates.

“It’s nice to see that our team is very supportive of each other, like sacrificing a spot,” Brune added. “They can function as a team at something that isn’t traditionally, at least for us, a team sport.”
