Glenwood swimmers prepped for 4A state meet
Glenwood Springs High School’s boys swimming team looks like it has more than its share of chances at podium finishes when the Class 4A State Championships take place at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton on Friday and Saturday.
Glenwood will compete in 10 of the 12 events, sending each of its eight team members to the state tournament. Among those state qualifications are each off the meet’s three relays in the 200-yard medley relay, the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
The swimmer who is in the best position for a high finish at state individually is Glenwood senior Zach Baker, whose time of 2 minutes, 2.15 seconds in the 200 individual medley is the eighth best in Class 4A. Even higher is his time in the 100 backstroke, which at 54.89 won him a title in the Western Slope Swimming Championships this past Saturday and gave him the classification’s fifth-best time.
Also entering the meet with a top-eight time is Glenwood senior Luke Herron, who is seeded seventh in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.68.
Team members are: Phillip Hecksel, Baker, James McMahon, Herron, Connor Somers, A.J. Lee, Zeb Thorsen and Jon Birzon.
