Golden downs Glenwood 2-1 in regional round
LAKEWOOD – The Demons advanced out of the regionals and into the state playoffs.
For Glenwood Springs High School girls soccer fans, however, it wasn’t the right Demons.
The Golden Demons upended the Glenwood Springs Demons by a 2-1 margin Thursday in the regional round of the Class 4A playoffs at Lakewood Memorial Field. With the win, Golden advances to next week’s 16-team Colorado State Playoffs.
“It was really an outstanding game,” Glenwood coach Steve White said. “It was a very exciting game, a very competitive game, but also very physical.”
Golden (11-3-2), the No. 2 seed out of the Jeffco League, took a 2-0 lead with a goal in each half by Brianna Blair and Anna Mangan.
Glenwood’s Chelsea Strautman cut the margin to 2-1 with 9 minutes remaining in the game, but Glenwood couldn’t break through for the equalizer.
“We scored with about 9 minutes left and had a lot of offense, but couldn’t get it into the net,” White said.
Goalie Keegan Nadon notched eight saves for Glenwood (10-5-1).
