Golfers from Roaring Fork Valley are knocked out of U.S. Open qualifier

LITTLETON, Colorado – The bids of former Roaring Fork Ram A.J. Joiner and Ironbridge Golf Club head pro Doug Rohrbaugh to play in the U.S. Open fell short Monday at the Littleton’s Columbine Country Club.Teeing off in a sectional qualifier for the June 9-15 U.S. Open, which will be held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Rohrbaugh carded a two-round score of 155 (78-77), while Joiner shot a 156 (76-80).Neither mark was good enough to nab a spot at the prestigious tournament.Qualifying for the U.S. Open from the Littleton sectional were Brian Kortan (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Jay Choi (Korea), who posted a 138 and 140, respectively.Rohrbaugh, who finished 24th at the sectional, enjoyed a solid run during the 2007 golf season, winning the Colorado Section PGA’s Imperial Cup along with eight Western Slope Pro Am tournaments and the Western Slope Professional Golfer of the Year award.Joiner, an amateur going up against a field composed largely of pros, finished 26th out of 28 golfers vying to make the trip to San Diego.The 2006 RFHS graduate qualified for the sectional tournament by finishing in a fourth-place tie in a local qualifier on May 13 in Pueblo.Joiner plays golf and attends school at South Mountain College in Phoenix.
