BOULDER, Colorado ” Running the Bolder Boulder is becoming an annual rite for Grand Valley High School’s track and field team.

Fourteen Cardinals made the trip east to run the vaunted 10-kilometer foot race on Memorial Day. It was the second straight year a contingent of Grand Valley athletes were in attendance.

And it was a big hit with each and every one of them.

“They loved it,” said Grand Valley assistant track coach Kim Whelan, who oversaw the trip. “[Brandi Krieg’s] comment when they were getting ready to go was that it was almost as good as Christmas.”

Krieg was one of the Cardinals’ top finishers, finishing the race in 45 minutes, 19 seconds to claim 10th place among 16-year-old girls.

Austin Germiller was 28th out of 263 18-year-old boys by clocking in at 40:03 and Sam Whelan, Coach Whelan’s son, placed 33rd out of 303 17-year-old boys with his time of 40:17.

While those are a few of Grand Valley’s top distance talents, a few of the team’s hurdlers and throwers even braved the 6.2-mile race.

Coach Whelan hopes to keep the tradition alive going forward. She says it’s a great way to close out the school year.

“It’s just good summer training,” she said. “And, you know, it’s kind of a way to finish out the season with a fun event. The kids enjoy doing it. It pushes them a little bit on distance, beyond what they even think they’re capable of doing.”
