Grand Valley wins district title

PAONIA ” Grand Valley got what eluded it last year: the Class 2A District 5 boys basketball title.

Behind 18 points from Tyler Jensen, 14 from William Waugh, 12 from Landon Paskett and 10 from Colton Cowan, the Cardinals trounced Paonia on its home court 64-49 on Saturday to advance to the Class 2A West Region as a No. 1 seed.

Grand Valley will play Mancos, the District 3 runner-up at Grand Junction High School next weekend with a trip to the Class 2A state tournament in Pueblo on the line.

The Cardinals (20-2), the defending 2A state champions, actually trailed Paonia 32-29 at halftime before igniting the offensive afterburners and lighting up the Eagles for 35 second-half points ” 20 of those coming in the fourth quarter.

“We came out and shot the ball real well and played some great defense,” Grand Valley coach Scott Kiburis said. “We made some minor adjustments that worked. We were kind of doubling down on their big kid and then following their shooter, who hit four 3s on us in the first quarter.”

Both Grand Valley’s boys and girls hoops teams will be in action at Saturday’s regional games in Junction. Grand Valley Athletic Director Jeff Bradley said he won’t know the exact times of the games until Monday, though the day’s action will kick off at 10 a.m.

The Cardinal girls (17-4) are slated to face Mancos, the District 3 champion.
