Grand Valley’s Brandi Krieg didn’t repeat as 3A Region 1’s girls cross country champ, but she is bound for state.

The senior finished eighth on a muddy course in Cortez on Saturday, punching her ticket to next Saturday’s state meet at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds in Aurora.

Krieg, the only Cardinal to advance past Saturday’s region meet, clocked in at 22 minutes, 18 seconds.

Grand Valley’s distance-running phenom will be looking for her third consecutive top-10 finish at state. She placed sixth as a junior and 10th as a sophomore.

Isaiah Martinez notched the Cardinals’ top boys finish, taking 19th in 19:40.

Krieg’s nearest-finishing teammate in the girls race was Eryn Paskett, who recorded a time of 24:56 to finish 31st.
