Greeley West pulls away from overmatched Rifle

The Spartans took no prisoners when taking on Rifle Thursday night.

Greeley West used a big third quarter to pull away from Rifle for an 86-48 victory in the third round of the Class 4A Girls State Tournament, held at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.The Bears, who finished the season at 19-5, stuck with the Lou Piel Region No. 1 seed through the first half, but couldn’t keep Aubrey Vandiver and her Spartan mates in check after intermission.

Leading 37-28 at halftime, Greeley West (24-1) took advantage of some Rifle turnovers and outscored the Bears 22-5 to seal the contest and a trip to Saturday’s quarterfinals against Berthoud.



Vandiver tallied a game-high 27 points for the Spartans. Lauren Dusin added 17.Kristin Guettler led Rifle with 14 points, while senior Montanah Matthies chipped in 13 points. Seniors Renee Laudick and Kristin Neffendorf scored eight and seven points, respectively, in their final game. Haley Hubbell, the squad’s other senior injured her knee earlier in the season and didn’t play in the tournament.
