Grizzlies roar to weekend sweep

With three regulars sidelined due to injuries, the depth of the Glenwood Grizzlies Midget hockey team is starting to earn dividends.Hunter Darien, taking his first shift at the center position, scored four goals and assisted on two others in wins over Vail and Steamboat Springs this weekend at the Community Center.”Our depth really showed as a team,” said Glenwood coach Tim Cota. Darien, in his new role, netted the Grizzlies’ second goal in the first period, en route to scoring a hat trick in a 10-3 rout of Vail on Friday.Shawn McKay, who raised Glenwood’s lead to 4-1 over the visiting Renegades, also netted a hat trick when he scored the Grizzlies’ last two goals of the game in the third period.McKay added his fifth goal of the weekend when he scored with 5 minutes, 14 seconds left in the first period of Saturday’s 4-1 victory against Steamboat.Glenwood forward Kevin Young also had a productive weekend. Over two games, Young scored three goals and had two assists.The team’s latest victories raised the Grizzlies’ overall record to 21-8 and 9-7 in league play. The local Midget team resumes play Saturday when they play a league game at the Denver Country Club.
