Grove going onto state swimming finals

FORT COLLINS ” Instead of shaving time off her scores in the preliminaries of the Class 4A state swimming and diving meet at Edora Pool and Ice Center on Friday, the Glenwood Springs freestyler added time.

Good thing for Grove, her previous times were so fast adding a little didn’t hurt her too bad. The junior still managed to place fifth in the 50 free and seventh in the 100 free, qualifying for today’s finals.

Her finishing places are the seeds she will have today, as she takes on the state’s fastest in the finals which begin at 3:30 p.m. Grove is hoping to take off the time she put on in Friday’s events and then some.

“I am just going to try and take off as much time as I can,” she said Thursday afternoon. “I am not focusing on place.”

Grove and her teammates didn’t get as lucky in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The Demon teams, comprised of Grove, Ali Schaiberger, Anna Wiltse and Keevyn Scholl, cut time off their qualifying marks and moved up from their previously ranked positions, but it wasn’t quite enough to make it into the finals.

The same was true for Schaiberger, a senior who dropped three seconds off her 500 freestyle time, but couldn’t quite crack the top 16. Scholl also came up shy of her bid to make the finals in her freshman year.

Along with Grove, Glenwood diver Jessica Betts will be competing for the Demons today. Betts, who is ranked No. 24, will participate in the prelims at 10:30 a.m. today, hoping for a spot in the finals ” which follow at 3:30 p.m.
