GSHS cheer team takes fourth in 4A state championships

Glenwood Springs High School’s cheerleading team finished fourth in the Class 4A State Spirit Championships in Denver this past Saturday.

The Demons competed in a 40-team field. Glenwood earned a judge’s score of 75.03 for its 2 1/2-minute routine to edge Erie (74.60) for the fourth-place finish.

Winning the state championship was Broomfield (90.27), with Pueblo West (77.27) and Palmer Ridge (75.27) following ahead of Glenwood Springs.

Glenwood competed in the state finals for the 12th time in the past 13 seasons.

“It’s tough to come from our little community and compete with teams that come from high schools twice the size or ours,” coaches Jody Jordan and Kat Hatch said. “Yet every year, these girls step up and represent our high school and the Western Slope very well.”

Also competing in the state championships was Coal Ridge, which managed a sixth-place finish in the Class 3A event. Rifle’s cheerleading team also competed in the 4A event, finishing 17th.

Glenwood’s cheerleading team will compete next in Florida in February at the National High School Cheerleading Championships.
