GSHS edges Devils in finale

Glenwood Springs boys basketball coach Kevin Flohr has been preaching improvement to his young squad, and fans got the opportunity to see it first-hand Friday and Saturday at the Demon Invitational.

They waited until the last minute to seal it, but the Demons made sure they didn’t leave their own tournament without a victory.

After falling to Faith Christian Friday night, then dropping an overtime contest to Ignacio Saturday morning, the Glenwood Springs boys basketball team held off Eagle Valley for a 64-61 win in the tournament finale Saturday night.

“They are starting to find out there is more than one side to the game,” said Flohr, who started three sophomores Saturday night.

Glenwood led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but an 11-0 Eagle Valley run ” which included a four-point play and a conventional three-point play ” to close out the third quarter changed the character of the contest dramatically.

The fourth quarter featured six ties and the game wasn’t decided until Glenwood’s Sean Flohr pulled down an errant Cody Gerard 3-point attempt with six seconds to go.

Flohr scored 12 of his team-high 25 points in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead jumper with 40 seconds left in regulation. Leading 62-61, the Demon defense clamped down and got a stop on the next Eagle Valley possession. Oscar Jurado gave the Demons a two-point edge going 1-for-2 from the charity stripe prior to Gerard’s miss. Flohr finished out the scoring with another 1-for-2 trip to the line.

Glenwood sophomore John Gabriel notched 12 points in the game ” 10 of which came in the first quarter ” and Jurado finished with 11.

Gerard tallied 25 points and was joined in double figures by Jerad Schlegal, who had 12 for the Devils.

In what was perhaps the most exciting game of the weekend, Ignacio edged the Demons 63-61 in overtime in the Saturday morning game.

The Demons netted four treys in the fourth quarter to rally from a 13-point deficit and force overtime. Ignacio, however, outscored Glenwood 10-8 in the extra period, finishing off the game with a dish and layup at the end of the overtime period.

Kevin Flohr attributed the defensive breakdown that led to the game-winning basket to his team’s inexperience.

“They lost sight of the man and it was over,” Kevin Flohr said.

Sean Flohr led the Demons in the losing effort with 21 points, including five treys, while Michael Flohr chipped in 14 points.

Ignacio’s Ben Neil led all scorers with 26 points. Lorenzo Rodriguez and Mike Jefferson scored 15 and 10, respectively.

In Friday night’s Demon game against Faith Christian, Glenwood got off to a good start, but was overcome down the stretch as the Eagles earned a 76-61 victory.

Glenwood carried a 36-28 advantage into halftime, but Faith Christian came alive after the intermission.

In the third quarter Faith Christian was just two points shy of equaling its first-half scoring total with 26 points, and led the Demons by two points heading into the final stanza.

The Eagles kept up the offensive pressure in the fourth quarter, outscoring Glenwood 22-6 frame.

Sean Flohr again netted five three-pointers and scored 27 points in the losing effort. Michael Flohr and Jurado netted 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Demons.

The Eagles’ Jordan Long led all scorers with 30 points, while Ryan Coon and Phil Vigil both reached double digits with 20 and 10, respectively.
