GSHS girls’ x-country takes honors

Staff Report

The Glenwood Springs Demons boys’ high school cross country team had an off day at the Aspen Chris Severy Invitational Saturday, but the girls’ made up for any shortcomings.

Led by Angie Vichick, the Glenwood girls team took first place in the 10-team junior varsity race.

“The girls had a great day,” Glenwood coach Joe Mollica said. “They are almost all freshman and won the junior varsity race by a large margin. They were just stoked.”

Vichick finished fifth with a time of 25 minutes and teammate Caitlin Bergman was 11th 36 seconds later. Cassidy Willey, Morgan Hill and Sade Thimsen came in with times of 26:08, 27:57 and 30:12, respectively.

On the boys’ side, Glenwood was eighth out of 20 schools. Marco Salmen was the top Glenwood finisher in 31st place with a time of 18:48. Chris Coddington placed 41st in 19:10. Alex Littler clocked in at 20:04, while Alex Tiernan and German Gil posted times of 21:11 and 21:43, respectively.

“It was just a little bit of an off day and it was just a real rough course,” Mollica said. “Alec Littler had a good day and improved his time over a minute from last year.”

Glenwood travels to Montrose next week and travels to Palisade the following week.
