GSMS Cougars win Eagle tournament

The Glenwood Springs Middle School 8th grade boys basketball teams are on a roll.The Cougars “A” team won five straight games at Saturday’s Eagle Valley Tournament to win the championship of the 10-team, double-elimination tournament.En route to the 55-30 championship game victory over St. John of Parachute, Glenwood won all of its games by a 17-point or better margin.Prior to the championship final, the Cougars defeated Eagle Valley, 36-19, St. John, 62-28, Summit, 54-26 and the Glenwood “B” team, 58-24.Kevin Screen scored a team-high 20 and 13 points in the first St. John game and against Glenwood’s “B” squad. Connor Riley dropped in 16 in the Summit contest and led the team in the championship game with 13 points. The Cougars “B” team won three of its five tournament games, defeating Gypsum Creek, Buena Vista and Carbondale.Daron Parker scored 14 and 10 points in the Gypsum Creek and Carbondale games. Cole Cleland tossed in 12 and eight points, respectively against Buena Vista and St. John.Both teams resume PEG League play Tuesday at Basalt.
