STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Glenwood Springs High School boys lacrosse team got a lead within 20 seconds of the start of Thursday’s Mountain League game at Steamboat Springs.

It was mostly downhill from there. The Sailors scored the next 17 goals to win on their home field on their senior night with ease, but Demons coach Rick Stevens said he’s seeing progress from his squad.

“We’re a young team and getting to play against a team like Steamboat is nice,” Stevens said. “We can observe and see how they move off ball and do other things we’re still learning.”

Glenwood’s goal came from Ben Liotta, who worked his way down the field after the opening faceoff and deposited the ball for a quick goal.

It was all Steamboat after that.

Jackson Draper scored four goals for the Sailors, Spencer Petersen had three and Andrew Firestone and Drew Williamson had two each.

The Sailors were up 10-1 after the first half, then kept the heat on in the second.

“We just had fun out there,” Steamboat senior Will Petersen said. “We played our game, scored goals and played Steamboat lacrosse.”

The loss, Glenwood’s second in a row after a three-game winning streak during the Swashbuckler Invitational in Englewood this past weekend, dropped Glenwood to 6-5 on the season. It plays next at home Saturday against Clear Creek, a game the Demons should have a good chance of winning.

“Fundamentally we’re doing a lot better,” Stevens said. “The program is still growing and I have a good, core group of young kids. Overall we’re 12-5 with JV and varsity. This is my fifth season and we probably didn’t win four games in the first four years. There’s a huge difference.”
