Glenwood Springs High School senior running back Henry Hill shared honors of the Class 3A Western Slope League Running Back of the Year, highlighting the list of Garfield County award winners who were recognized when the WSL’s all-conference team was released on Monday.

Hill, who was named co-back of the year along with Palisade’s Levi Hoaglund, was one of a slew of Glenwood and Rifle players who received all-conference recognition. The award winners were determined by coaches around the league prior to the postseason, which began on Nov. 9.

Teams that have a higher finish in the regular-season standings receive more all-conference award winners as determined by the league bylaws. The league’s co-champions, Palisade and Rifle, each received seven first-team players, with award winners typically descending based on a team’s finish in league play.

Hill finished with 1,691 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 272 carries. His dependability extended beyond that, however, as he was an outlet receiver out of the backfield and was also Glenwood’s primary kickoff and punt returner. He finished the season with more than 2,200 all-purpose yards, including the 306-yard outing he had against Montezuma-Cortez on Oct. 25.

Hoaglund, Palisade’s quarterback, finished with 1,985 yards of total offense — 1,346 on the ground and 639 through the air.

Joining Hill in earning a first-team nod for Glenwood were seniors Justin Barnham, Garrett Lowe and Cole Adams, with junior Evrett Marr earning recognition.

Rifle’s entire offensive backfield earned first-team, all-conference recognition. Junior quarterback Layton Stutsman, along with junior running back Brock Clark and senior running backs Kellin Leigh, Bailey Hoffmeister and Javier Nunez. Senior tight end and defensive end Tanner Quick, along with lineman Austin Shepard, were also named to the first team.

The Bears, who tied Palisade in the league standings but had a lower playoff seed since the Bulldogs beat them in the regular season, finished their 11-game season with 4,522 yards of total offense, with 3,807 coming on the ground. Rifle lost to eventual state champion Coronado, 34-31, in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs.

Earning an honorable mention from Rifle were seniors Zack Bare and Clayton Coombs along with juniors Jose Prado and Cody Rice. Honorable mentions for Glenwood included juniors Sam Carmer, Cristian Gonzalaz and Tristan Harris, and seniors Travis Lundin, Chris Sarabia and Derrick Chase.

Earning an honorable mention was Delta sophomore running back Jonny Pounce, whose 1,702 rushing yards were tops in Class 3A.

Palisade senior Zach Marengo was named the league’s lineman of the year. Palisade coach Joe Ramunno was named the WSL’s coach of the year.
