‘Horns avenge only league loss

ASPEN – The Basalt Longhorns girls’ basketball team avenged its only league loss of the season Tuesday night, with a 58-43 victory over 3A Western Slope League foe Aspen.

And the Jan. 18 loss to Aspen was certainly on the minds of the Longhorn players going into the contest.

“They took something precious from us, and on our home court,” Basalt coach Debbie Alcorta said of the earlier 48-42 loss to the Skiers.

“Our first league loss in 21⁄2 years and our first home loss in 21⁄2 years – we wanted to avenge that. We wanted redemption.”

Basalt’s Mariah Mulcahy led three Longhorn players in double digits with 21 points. Lauren Redfern and Autumn Caughern added 19 and 12, respectively.

“Number one, we played our game, and the shots went in,” Alcorta said. “Number two, we took the ball to the hole.”

The Longhorns’ defense held standout Aspen center Lizzie Suiter to seven field goals and 21 points, and didn’t allow any other Skier player to score more than six points.

Basalt (9-1) takes a half-game lead in the WSL over Cedaredge (8-1) with the win. The Longhorns face Cedaredge at home Friday night. In the previous meeting this season, Basalt pasted the Bruins 60-37.

Aspen drops to 5-5 in the WSL.
