‘Horns Kindell takes third, Rams solid in jumps

PUEBLO – Basalt’s Hank Kindell brought home bronze and Roaring Fork’s Tommy Joiner leaped to a fourth-place finish to lead area athletes at the Class 3A State Track and Field Championships Saturday.
Kindell improved more than eight feet on his regional meet-winning discus throw and set a new school record with a toss of 152 feet, 10 inches to earn third place. La Junta’s Patrick Berg won the event with a toss of 154-7, while Chadd Dykhoff of Manitou Springs was second at 153-2.
Roaring Fork had an exceptional meet in the jumps, racking up five top-six finishes in the triple, long and high jumps split between three athletes.
Joiner had the highest finish with his fourth place in the long jump with a mark of 20-31Ú4. He was joined in the top six by teammate James Leonard, who finished sixth at 19-101Ú2. Eagle Valley’s Brad Gamble won the event with a mark of 21-01Ú2. Leonard also took sixth place in the triple jump with a leap of 40-21Ú2.
In the high jump, Joiner and teammate Lloyd Tucker shared sixth place as both jumpers cleared 5-10. Buena Vista’s Jeremy Tidwell took top honors in the event, clearing 6-6.
In 2A meet action, Sam McKinley was the only qualifier for Grand Valley and he made sure the Cardinals didn’t get blanked. McKinley placed ninth in the 100 meters.
