Jay medals at regionals
DURANGO ” Glenwood Springs High School swimmer Jonathan Jay earned a third-place medal in the 500 and finished fifth in the 200 yard freestyle at the seven-team boys Western Regional meet at Fort Lewis College’s pool on Saturday.
Jay, a sophomore, posted a 5 minute, 22.60 second time in the 500 among the top six swimmers who advanced to Saturday’s meet finals from Friday’s preliminaries. Earlier, in the 200, Jay clocked in at 1:56.22, three seconds ahead of Durango’s Aaron Miller, for fifth place.
In the relay events, Glenwood’s 200 yard freestyle team of Jamie Giezentanner, Hansen Nordsiek, Bryce McDermott and Jay finished eighth with a time of 1:50.69. The same foursome also took ninth place in the medley relay.
As a team, the six-member Demon squad scored 46 points and finished in sixth place. Montrose won the team championship with 414 points followed by the District 51 Griffins with 349.50 points.
The Griffins roster consists of students from Grand Junction, Grand Junction Central, Fruita Monument and Palisade high schools.
Jay and Damien Gucwa, who was absent from the regional meet, will compete at the 4A state meet at Mountain View High School in Loveland this weekend.
