Jay swims to 4A consolation finals

Senior freestyler Jon Jay will be the only Glenwood Springs High School swimmer to continue on to day two of the Class 4A state championship meet at the Edora Pool and Ice Center in Fort Collins.Jay qualified for the consolation finals in the first round of the meet Friday after taking 10th in the 500-meter freestyle and placing 13th in the 200 free. He will be back in the pool today with high hopes from his coach and father Howard Jay.”I think he was a little off in his times. He had his best time of the year in the 200, but was a little off in the 500,” Coach Jay said. “He needs to be faster in the 500, but he’s strong in the 200. Hopefully he can move up a couple places.”The 400 freestyle relay of Jay, Bryce McDermott, Jamie Giezentanner and Michael Ball finished 18th in the event, just two spots away from advancing to the consolation finals. The same foursome swam to a 20th-place finish in the 200 free relay.McDermott, the only Demon to compete in an individual event besides Jon Jay, took 20th in the 500 free. All in all, Coach Jay was happy with his team’s performance. “Not great, but not bad. The times weren’t bad, kind of just around the same as last week at regionals,” Coach Jay said. “Overall I was real pleased. Not a bad day’s work.”The finals and consolation finals will begin today at 3:30 p.m. in Fort Collins.
