Joiner claims second at Devil’s Thumb

Adam Joiner of Roaring Fork shot an area’s best round of 73 to finish second at Thursday’s Devils’ Thumb Invitational boys prep golf tournament in Delta.Two additional area golfers, Connor Rakowski and Jim Knous from Basalt High School, also finished among the top five. Rakowski carded a two-over round of 74 for third place. Knous, who had a 77, tied for fifth.In the team standings, the Basalt Longhorns concluded the 18-hole event tied for second place with Battle Mountain at 245, three shots ahead of fourth-place Rifle’s score of 248. Montrose won the team trophy with a combined team score of 233.Matt Hubbell recorded the lowest round for the Rifle at 80. Brandon Forney and Steven Anderson finished at 83 and 85, respectively. Mike Sours and Shawn Crews both had rounds of 88.Roaring Fork is scheduled to play in today’s Bruin Invitational at the Deer Creek Village Golf Course in Cedaredge. Most of the Western Slope golf teams are then off through Labor Day weekend.Rifle swept in volleyball openerPlaying the first of two road games against Grand Junction-based teams, the Bears fell 3-0 to the host Central Warriors in nonleague match Thursday.Central, led by Katie Welch’s nine kills, posted wins of 25-16, 25-9, 25-22. No other information was available.Rifle (0-1) takes on Grand Junction High School on Tuesday.
