In his first Union Cyclist International ProTour race since crashing in the Tour de France, Bobby Julich climbed back on his bike and raced in the Tour de Germany Aug. 1-9.Julich, a Glenwood Springs High School graduate, placed 69th in the race, while CSC teammate Jens Voigt won three stages and the overall title. It was the 50th victory in the career of 34-year-old Voigt, who is from Berlin.Julich clocked a time of 32 hours, 41 minutes and 35 seconds in the 1,390.5-kilometer race. He commented on his espn.com diary during the race:”I’m surviving in the Tour of Germany. I’m telling you, after that crash I had in the Tour de France and not being able to train for two weeks, I’m happy to be here and around the races again,” Julich said. “But the body just isn’t responding the way I want it to. It’s a very difficult time for me right now. But that was kind of to be expected after basically taking three weeks off after a major crash like that.”On July 8, Julich was forced to drop out of the Tour de France after breaking his wrist and suffering a large amount of road rash in the seventh stage of the race.On July 29, Julich also competed in a two-man time trial race in Germany. In that race, Julich teamed up with Voigt and the duo finished sixth. Julich and Voigt had won the race the previous two years.
