Julich in top 50 as Tour heads to the hills

Glenwood Springs native Bobby Julich moved into the top 50 overall after Monday’s time trial from Lanester to Lorient, France, but lost 3 minutes, 37 seconds to the overall leader Gonzalez Galdeano.

The climbing stages begin today and Julich sits in 49th overall and 6:53 behind the leader.

“The time trial is one of my favorite disciplines, so it always kind of stings to not do as well as you thought you could,” Julich wrote in his online journal at bobbyjulich.com after the ninth stage.

Julich, however, admits he thought it would be worse. Santiago Botero posted a time of 1:22:18 – 3:56 better than Julich – and Julich figured Lance Armstrong would top that time by a significant margin. But Armstrong finished second, 11 seconds behind Botero.

“I definitely got some wind back in my sails when Lance didn’t post the best time,” Julich wrote. “Losing four minutes isn’t the end of the world. With the mountains coming, four or seven minutes doesn’t change my overall strategy – you can lose seven minutes on one climb in one day during a mountain stage.”

With the mountains rising up in front of the riders today, Julich realizes he is a wild card, and may be overlooked if he gets out in a breakaway group.

“It’s a whole new ballgame and I still feel good,” he wrote. “When you feel good I think you have to take the little disappointments just as you would the big result. You have to stay confident and optimistic and look for the opportunities.
