Junior Gents claim first victory of season

The valley’s high school rugby team, the Junior Gentlemen, won its first match of the season 27-18 against a combined ThunderRidge/Douglas County squad on Saturday at Rio Grande Park in Aspen.

Drawing players largely from Basalt and Roaring Fork high schools, the Junior Gents owned a 27-6 lead at one point in the second half, having allowed just two 3-point penalty kicks in the first half.

Down the stretch against a team that draws players from two Class 5A schools, the Junior Gents gave up a pair of tries.

Luke Vories of Alpine Christian Academy scored the Junior Gents’ first try, and James Leonard, the senior Roaring Fork football running back of the 11-1 Rams last fall, scored two tries. Roaring Fork’s Christian Tena and Michael Quint also found the try-zone for the Junior Gents.

The Junior Gents improved to 1-3 on the season.

“Chris Black had a really strong game from the flanker position and Luke Harris had a great game at scrumhalf,” said Junior Gents coach Tory Jenson.

“Kicking was by committee,” he chuckled. “I think we only converted one (2-point after-try conversion), so we’ve got some work to do in that department.”

On Saturday, the Junior Gents host Ridgeview at Roaring Fork, then next Wednesday the Gents travel to face Vail.

“We finally got that first win and we looked pretty good in getting it,” said Jenson. “Hopefully, we can carry some momentum into our remaining games.”
