Leuallen, Staerkel net all-state honors

Rifle’s Brandon Leuallen and Basalt’s Katie Staerkel both earned first-team spots on the Rocky Preps all-state teams released Thursday.

Leuallen is the second baseman for the all-Class 4A baseball team, and Staerkel was named to the all-3A girls soccer team.

Leuallen, who was also the Bears’ top pitcher, finished his senior season with a .435 batting average. Teammates Matt Jones and Adam Krick, both senior infielders, earned honorable mention. Jones and Krick finished with batting averages of .483 and .492, respectively.

Glenwood Springs senior outfielder Taylor Wilde also captured 4A-honorable mention kudos after finishing the season with a .532 average, and Roaring Fork utility player Jake Bowman was a 3A honorable mention. He posted a .596 batting average in his junior season.

Staerkel, a sophomore, led three Basalt players to earn accolades from Rocky Preps. Freshman Jessica Graf and senior Sofie Stenstadvold were both named honorable mention.

Staerkel led the Longhorns with 23 goals and 10 assists, while Graf posted 10 goals and nine assists during the regular season.
