Local Sports Briefs: CARE to hold 5K run; GSHS football team to hold kids camp Aug. 12-14

Colorado Animal Rescue is holding its second-annual Dog Day 5K on Aug. 23 at Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs.

This event is for people of all ages, to run or walk, with or without your furry friends. All pets must be friendly and on leash. Proceeds go to shelter animals at CARE.

Cost until Aug. 22 is $20 and goes up to $22 on race day. Kids under 8 run free. Preregister online at coloradoanimalrescue.org, at CARE, or Summit Canyon in Glenwood Springs. Drinks and snacks provided after the race. Dog Day 5K T-shirts go to the first 100 entries. Race-day registration begins at 7 a.m. on Aug. 23, and the race starts at 8 a.m.

Girls on the Run program now taking registrations

Girls on the Run of Western Colorado, a mentoring and life-skills program, has announced its registration for the upcoming 2014-15 program.

The fall program will begin registration on Aug. 22, and registration will continue through Sept. 5. It will be offered at Crystal River Elementary, Glenwood Springs Elementary, Sopris Elementary, Ross Montessori and Basalt Elementary.

Cost if $50, which included 20 lessons delivered by coaches, a Girls on the run T-shirt and an entry fee for the end-of-season 5K. Scholarships are available.

GSHS youth football camp begins today

The Glenwood Youth Football Camp will place from 4:45-6:30 p.m. today through Aug. 14.

Football skills instruction will be given by the Glenwood Springs High School football staff and varsity players to boys and girls grades 3 to 8 in this non-contact camp.

Cost is $30, and a T-shirt is included. Participants must bring a water bottle, cleats and ball hat. Registration is available the day of the camp.

New Castle Rec running Micro Soccer program

The New Castle Recreation Department is currently accepting registrations for its Micro Soccer program.

Micro Soccer is a developmental soccer program offered for children ages 4-7 and includes one to two practices a week, with scrimmage games on Friday afternoons and evenings. The emphasis of the program is on fun and learning the basic skills of soccer. No scores or team standings are kept in order to promote the joy of playing the sport without the worry of winning or losing.

The program runs from September to mid-October. Cost is $50, and space is limited. There is an additional $10 jersey fee for those who didn’t play last season.

Youth, adult volleyball programs now available

The New Castle Recreation Department is offering an Introduction to Volleyball program for children in third and fourth grades, and a Youth Volleyball League for those in fifth and sixth grades.

The Introduction to Volleyball program will be Tuesday evenings, and the youth league will be Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The programs will focus on teaching the basic skills of the sport: passing, serving, setting and hitting. Both programs begin on Sept. 9 and will run from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Riverside Middle School. The fee for Introduction to Volleyball is $40 by Sept. 3 and $50 after. The youth league fee is $60 until Sept. 3. All participants will receive a T-shirt.

Flag football for youth begins next month

The New Castle Recreation Department is accepting registration for youth flag football programs that begin in early September.

The Intro to Flag Football is for boys and girls in first and second grades and will be held from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. on Mondays. The Youth Flag Football League is for children in third through sixth grades and will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Cost for the Intro program is $40 by Sept. 8 and $50 afterward. The fee for the youth league is $50 by Aug. 29.

Fall sports programs available in New Castle

The New Castle Recreation Department is offering a variety of fall sports programs for adults beginning in early September.

A new Beach Doubles League on Thursday evenings, and an indoor Mixed 4 vs. 4 Volleyball League on Tuesday evenings, will be available. A Beach Challenge Tourney will be held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at the newly refurbished sand court at New Hope Park. Cost is $10 per player.

Other adult sports programs include an 8-on-8 coed soccer league on Sunday afternoons, a 5-on-5 flag football league on Wednesdays, and an indoor pickleball league on Monday evenings.
