Local Sports Briefs: FireKracker 4K race scheduled for July 4

Registrations are being accepted for the annual FireKracker 4K, which will take place in Glenwood Springs on July 4.

The race, which will be organized by the Glenwood Springs Lions Club, will serve as a fundraiser for the Lion’s Vision support program.

The run will start and finish at Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs, with a half-mile fun run for children following.

Cost is $20 for adults and $10 for racers 17 and under until July 2. Race-day registration begins at 7 a.m., with the race beginning at 8 a.m.

Participate in The Longevity Project

The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.

Annual Hogback Hustle 5K race takes place on July 11

The annual Hogback Hustle 5K Family Fun Run/Walk will take place July 11 in New Castle.

The race, which serves as the fifth of six races in the Colorado River Valley Charity Race Series, will start in the New Castle City Market parking lot and end in downtown New Castle at Burning Mountain Park. Water and a post-race breakfast will be provided at the finish line.

Cost is $25 per person and will go up to $30 for registrations received after July 8. All proceeds will go to benefit the New Castle Lions Club.

Youth sports camps available in New Castle

The New Castle Recreation Department is offering a variety of youth sports camps this summer.

A new Introduction to Lacrosse Camp for Children ages 6-12 will be held July 13-16. There will also be a Multi-Sport Camp for kids ages 6-12 from June 29 to July 2.

Also, the popular Lil’ Kickers soccer program for kids ages 3-5 returns in a camp format from July 6-9.

Also, a grass volleyball camp for children 8-14 takes place from June 22-25, and the Extreme Flag Football Camp for ages 6-12 will be held July 20-23.

Preregistration is required for all camps.

Glenwood Open now accepting registrations

Registrations are now being accepted for the annual Glenwood Open and Pro-am golf tournament, which is scheduled for the second week of July at Glenwood Springs Golf Course.

The Pro-am event will take place on July 10, with the two-round open running from July 11-12.

Adult golf programs available through New Castle Recreation

The New Castle Recreation Department, in partnership with Lakota Canyon Golf Course, is offering golf programs for adults this summer.

Adult golf clinics are offered from 6:15-8 p.m. Tuesdays throughout the summer, with the next session running from July 7-28. Cost is $99 per person for four classes, or $30 for one class.

Students should bring their own clubs, but rentals are available on a limited basis.
