Local Sports Briefs: Tailgate party planned before Class 3A football playoff game Saturday

A tailgate party has been planned prior to Glenwood Springs High School’s Class 3A state playoff game against Delta on Saturday.

KMTS-FM (99.1, 95.9 and 99.5) will host the tailgate party in the primary Glenwood Springs High School parking lot right outside Stubler Memorial Field. The tailgate party will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday prior to the game’s 1 p.m. kickoff. Brisket and pulled pork will be served along with coffee and hot chocolate. Facepainters and music will also be available, and all who attend are encouraged to bring a side dish or salad.

CLUB SKIING

Buddy Werner ski program accepting registrations

Registration is now open for the Buddy Werner and Buddy Werner Plus skiing programs for the 2014 season at Sunlight Mountain. Racing programs start at 9 a.m. Jan. 4, and preregistration is encouraged. Cost for the program, which meets for two months from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, is $350. Cost for the Buddy Werner Plus team, which meets for 16 days, is $550. There is a $30 bib deposit, and four hours of volunteer time required.

The Buddy Werner program is designed for skiers aged 6-14 years who want to develop ski skills in a fun, kid-oriented program designed to give children an exposure to alpine ski racing.

Also available is competitive racing, with teams from Sunlight, Powderhorn, Beaver Creek, Steamboat Springs and Crested Butte all racing for the coveted Council Cup. Sunlight will also host the Western Council Cup Buddy Werner Finale from March 8-9.

RUNNING

Annual Turkey Trot 5K to be held on Nov. 28

The annual Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run will be held again on Nov. 28 next to the Glenwood Springs Community Center.

The race will begin at 10 a.m. The Glenwood Springs High School boys and girls swim teams, along with the Sopris Barracudas and GSHS cross country team, will be preselling race entries starting on Nov. 6. Prerace registration will be held at Independence Run and Hike in Carbondale and Summit Canyon Mountaineering in Glenwood beginning Nov. 11, also.

Cost for prerace registration is $10, and race-day registration will be $15 and begin at 8:30 a.m.

Volleyball officials sought for 2014 high school season

Area 6 Volleyball Officials are seeking high school volleyball officials for the 2014 season in both the Roaring Fork Valley and the Vail Valley.

Officials will be asked to run volleyball matches from Coal Ridge High School to Aspen and from Glenwood Springs to Battle Mountain High School.

Free pickleball clinic scheduled for Nov. 20 in New Castle

The New Castle Recreation Department is offering a free pickleball clinic to be held from 6:45-8:45 p.m. Nov. 20 at Elk Creek Elementary School.

Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, table tennis and volleyball. It is played on a court with a hard paddle and small wiffle ball. Participants do not need to be athletically gifted to play, and it is much easier to learn than many other traditional sports.

Sunlight Winter Sports Bus begins again on Dec. 14

Rifle Parks and Recreation is again hosting the Sunlight Winter Sports Bus, which will transport skiers to Sunlight Mountain Resort beginning Dec. 14.

The bus runs every Saturday from Dec. 14 to March 29, with no bus pickup on Dec. 25. The bus stops off in Parachute, Rifle, Silt and New Castle, with arrival at Sunlight at 9 a.m. and departure from Sunlight at 3:30 p.m. The bus is limited to 47 riders.

Cost is $15 for a season pass and $5 per ride. Buses will run weekly on Saturdays and on various days during Christmas Break, which will be from Dec. 21 through Jan. 1.

Turkey Bowl flag football tournament seeks teams

New Castle Recreation is seeking adult flag football teams to register for the 5-on-5 Turkey Bowl Tournament to be held Nov. 23 at Grand River Park.

The tournament will be played using the official NFL Flag Football tournament rules. Play begins at 9 a.m.

Registration is $75 per team until Nov. 18, and $100 after.
