Longhorn boys fall 54-48 to Hotchkiss

BASALT – The Basalt Longhorns couldn’t hold off a second-half rally by Hotchkiss, as the Bulldogs earned a 54-48 victory here Tuesday night in Class 3A Western Slope League boys basketball action.

The victory brings Hotchkiss (6-7 WSL, 8-10 overall) into a tie for fourth in the league standings with Basalt (6-7, 6-12). The top four spots have the home-court advantage in the first round of next week’s district tournament.

Basalt led 31-22 after the first half, but the Bulldogs held the Longhorns to just three third-quarter points and outscored Basalt 21-14 in the fourth quarter.

Kyle Kappeli, Travis Schwan and Ryan Thompson each had 10 points to lead the Longhorns in the losing effort.

Basalt wraps up its season Friday night against third-place Roaring Fork (9-4, 11-7), while Hotchkiss faces Gunnison (1-12) tonight in its final regular-season game.
