Longhorn girls roll to pair of easy victories

The Basalt Longhorns girls’ basketball team showed there is a bit of a disparity between the top teams and the rest 3A Western Slope League.

All 10 players on the Longhorn roster scored as Basalt coasted to a 74-16 blowout victory over Olathe Friday night. On Saturday, Basalt rolled to a 69-46 win over Gunnison at the Big House in Basalt.

“Everything went well,” Basalt head coach Debbie Alcorta said of Friday’s game against Olathe. “The defense was the most incredible thing we’ve done this entire year.”



With the victory, the Longhorns (8-1) keep pace with co-league leader Cedaredge. Olathe fell to 3-6 in league play after falling to Roaring Fork Saturday night. Saturday’s loss drops Gunnison to 1-8 on the season.

Mariah Mulcahy posted a game-high 21 posts for the Longhorns against Olathe, while Autumn Caughern notched the triple-double with 20 points, with 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Lauren Redfern was also in double digits with 14 points and a monster on the boards with 16 rebounds.



In Saturday’s game, the Longhorns jumped out to a 26-10 lead in the first quarter and never trailed in the victory.

Mulcahy again paced the Longhorns with 28 points, while Caughern matched her point total from the previous night with 20 points. Redfern finished the night in double digits again with 12 points.

Longhorn boys keep Olathe winless in league

OLATHE – Despite big game’s from Cole Brown and Garrett Pietak, the Basalt Longhorns boys basketball team kept Olathe winless in 3A Western Slope League play with a 64-59 victory here Friday night.

Basalt (5-3) pulled away from Olathe (0-8) late, outscoring the Pirates 18-14 in the final period after leading by one point after three quarters of play.

Three Longhorn players finished in double figures with Kyle Kappeli notching 13 points and Ryan Thompson and Danny Popish netting 12 and 10, respectively.

Pietak led all scorers with 21 points for the Pirates, while Brown tallied 19, including five three-pointers.

Basalt played Gunnison (1-7) Saturday. Results were not available at press time.

Cardinal boys fall to Meeker

MEEKER – A poor third quarter in which Grand Valley only scored three points sealed a 55-47 victory for Meeker Thursday night in high school boys’ basketball action.

The Cardinals led 25-24 at halftime, but Meeker had a commanding 41-28 advantage by the end of the third frame.

Chris Uiseardi paced Meeker with 14 points. Jason Conklin was the high scorer for the Cardinals with 15, while Justin Conklin and Chris Johnson each scored 12 in the losing effort.

Grand Valley’s overall record drops to 6-7.
