Longhorn girls steamroll Olathe and Gunnison
The Basalt high school girls’ basketball team wrapped up the weekend with a pair of convincing victories over Class 3A Western Slope League opponents.
The Longhorns (3-0 WSL, 6-2 overall) downed Olathe 68-29 at home on Friday night, then traveled to Gunnison and came away with a 62-25 win.
“I’m thrilled with the weekend in general,” Basalt coach Debbie Alcorta said.
And for good reason.
The Longhorns only allowed their opponents into double digits in one quarter when they gave up 10 points in the fourth against Gunnison.
On Friday night Autumn Caughern and Mariah Mulcahy led the ‘Horns with 21 points each, while Lauren Redfern chipped in 15.
Four Basalt players reached double digits Saturday against Gunnison, with Redfern scoring a team-high 22. Brittany Pollock and Mulcahy tallied 10 each, while Caughern had 13.

Basalt 71, Olathe 44
BASALT -In the first game back from the state-mandated holiday break, the Basalt Longhorn boys posted a 71-44 Class 3A Western Slope League win over Olathe here Friday.
Ryan Thompson led Basalt with 20 points. Two other Longhorns, Kyle Kappel and Danny Popish, ended in double figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively.
It was Basalt’s first victory of the 2002-03 season. The win evens the ‘Horns Class 3A WSL record at 1-1 and 1-5 overall. Olathe dropped to 0-2, 1-6.
After taking a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, Basalt took a commanding 16-point lead at intermission by scoring 24 points in the second quarter.
Thompson scored 10 of the ‘Horns points in the period.
