Longhorns dominate all-WSL team selections
Fellow soccer coaches named Basalt High School’s Erik Streff the Class 3A Western Slope League coach of the year, and eight of Streff’s players joined him with postseason accolades.
The Longhorns – who finished the season 12-4-1 after getting knocked out of the state playoffs in the quarterfinals – placed five players on the WSL’s all-conference first team, while three other players received honorable mention.
No other team had more than five players on the first-team or honorable mention combined.
Basalt midfielder Cy Eaton and teammate Jesse Schoeller, a defenseman, were the only sophomores named to the first team. Basalt seniors Spencer Cleveland, Ryan Thompson and Travis Schwan were also first-team selections.
Cleveland led the Longhorns in scoring with 15 goals and 10 assists, while Thompson, a midfielder, tallied 10 goals and five helpers.
Felipe Sanchez was the only freshman to receive postseason honors, earning an honorable mention nod. Longhorns Brett Guglielmo and Jake Rankin were also on the honorable mention list.
Three Roaring Fork players captured all-conference kudos, led by seniors Arnold Hernandez and Ben Wright on the first team. Junior Erick Hernandez was an honorable mention for the Rams.
Senior Gaalen McKee was the only first-team selection from Colorado Rocky Mountain School. Seniors Han Sol Kim and Josh Paigen were honorable mention.
Vail Mountain High School’s Andrew Feldman was voted player of the year.
