Loss drops Three Rivers into state tournament elimination game

WINTER PARK — Boulder North pulled away from the Three Rivers Little League baseball team late in the game after what had been a close contest, eventually prevailing 16-4 in the second round of the Colorado Little League state tournament on Saturday morning.

Boulder North, which won last year’s state championship, took advantage of Three Rivers’ fielding and baserunning miscues to pull away after leading just 4-3 headed into the fourth inning. Offensively, Three Rivers left the bases loaded four times.

Rio Kauffman hit a two-run double and Jake Ticer and Sam Fitzwilliams each had a pair of hits for Three Rivers to lead the local team’s lineup.

With the loss, Three Rivers dropped into the elimination bracket of the double-elimination state tournament. The team will play at noon today against academy Little League out of Colorado Springs, with the winner moving back into contention for the state title.
